Truths Before I Told You

I wrote this shortly before going after my lovely Emma. I was in a rough spot, for sure, but you never know when life will give you treasures. After asking her permission (it is her poem, after all) she has agreed to allow me to release it to the public.  I am a fortunate man beyond measure. I hope you all enjoy my first entry.

Truths Before I Told You

What if I told you the truth, instead of lies?
My flaws, my weaknesses without the alibis.
Would you accept me for who I am or subtly cast me out
Tell me your own version of excuses and reflect upon doubt.

I’ve held things from you that I hold really dear,
Beckoning, calling, hoping for an ear.
But it’s never the right time, never the right place,
The wrong situation, the wrong time and space.

There are a few things to know, few ultimate truths.
Things that this life will tell you, reveal as obtuse.
On this planet we are alone, all we have is each other,
To use, to abuse, to love one another.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt and without affectation,
Some sensible scruples with prolific alliteration.
Time will someday efface all the marks that we leave,
Without prejudice, without reverence, without sentimentality or reprieve.

It is an honest truth that life is finite.
But my existence is worthwhile, having you show me the light.
I respect your wild spirit, your vitality and verve.
I think greatness of your future, unflinching, nearly absurd.

We are cast among each other, and those that shine bright are but a few.
I am happy, I am grateful, to have honestly met you.
