Aaron Scamihorn is an artist that’s also an iconographer, typographer, and photographer. That’s a lot of [–ographer]’s, whew!
He recently performed admirably in the Coudal Partner’s Layer Tennis with a pretty solid match against Shaun Inman. Ultimately, Inman would win by popular vote (though the results are questionable as many may have voted on Inman’s popularity versus his in–match performance, which I think Inman also wished was better but lacked prep time. Inman would later come back with a vengeance to win the second season).
Layer Tennis aside, Scamihorn is doing excellent work. His illustrations blend strong typography with texture and worn–n–weathered detail. The style is an interesting take on the modernized vintage aesthetic, producing both an amusing and inspiring body of work — I could be wrong on the “amusing” angle, though; maybe Sarkozy really is that happy, he is married to Carla Bruni!
His portfolio is functional and simple, highlighting his endeavors and inspirations while also utilizing the same textured aesthetic found in his artwork to give the entire experience a refined grit feel, and boosting an already intimidating image. Underneath the tough aesthetic though, Aaron is a very humble and receptive artist, happy with his job life. Why can’t more designers be like that?
