Movie still of main characters James and Em from Adventureland

Having just graduated from college, James Brennan’s plans hit a startling snag as his dream trip to Europe is grounded and he is forced to find a summer job to pay for his upcoming graduate studies in the fall. While earnest in his attempts to find work, a reality sets in, “What am I supposed to do. I’m not even qualified for manual labor.” The answer: Adventureland.

Jesse Eisenberg turns in an great performance as James, and gives us a reminder of his previous work in Roger Dodger, again playing a naïve youth coming of age.

The story is an honest and perfectly set coming–of–age story during the 80’s, with great characters, fun story lines and interesting sub–plots. Sure, a few jokes fall flat and some scenes seem injected for humor when they are neither needed nor funny, but overall, it hits the right notes.
