James Jean is an amazing painter based out of Los Angeles, California. His style blends the paint strokes of ancient Asian artwork (typically found on scrolls) with ghost–like detail, giving an end result that can best be described as “hauntingly beautiful”.
His personal work often represents abstractions of emotions, passions, experiences, while commissioned pieces typically travel into the realm of imaginatively interpreting reality or creating outright fantasy worlds. His rise in popularity can be somewhat owed to his work as a cover artist for comics, most notably for his extensive work on Vertigo’s Fables. Moving away from cover art, his commissioned work is gaining fame as most are like his murals for PRADA are jaw–droppingly gorgeous.
He is currently one of my favorite contemporary painters, humble and hard–working, pleased to have fans of his work, and happy to be doing what he loves. I’m pretty sure my next place of living will be a mini–gallery of his work as I am slowly collecting several prints of his to frame and display!
