Tim Roth from Lie to Me

Cal Lightman (played by Tim Roth) is an expert in uncovering deception through analysis of micro–expressions and behavior mannerisms. Based upon the real–life Facial Action Coding System created by Paul Eckman, Lie to Me follows The Lightman Group (Cal’s firm of deception experts) on a series of cases to determine who’s lying and what their motivations are.

Tim Roth is fun to watch as Cal Lightman — his character disassembles suspects with his impressive barrage of varied interrogation tactics, eventually using the slightest detail to unravel people from the inside out. The most interesting thing about this show is the dynamics. The FACS system is pretty solid and brilliant, and while it’s nice to always know when someone is lying to you, the show slowly builds on an even more interesting and on–going sub–plot: How does a group of living lie detectors work with each other, and more importantly, interact in their daily lives with the people around them?

Those dynamics bring about interesting questions about human interaction. Namely, what are we willing to lie for? What are we willing to forgive? And finally, what are we willing to ignore?
