Review: Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D

Part two of Nine Inch Nails’s Year Zero Project comes as a remix album, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D.

This album is just as cool as the original album, but for different reasons. While the original Year Zero album had merits for its lyrics and ambitions, R3M1X succeeds on the simple principle that it’s interesting to hear music re-interpreted. Even more impressively, Reznor decided to add an additional disc with master tracks, encouraging listeners to create remixes themselves.

The varied artists bring some interesting takes on the source material, and my main interest was a Kronos Quartet rendition of “Another Version of the Truth.” I admit, this album may not appeal to all audiences, so I advise finding a way to preview the tracks (Amazon or iTunes, perhaps) before diving in if you are concerned. If you are an experimenting musician though, buying is definitely worth it to get the masters to play around with.
